How to add and remove the Gmail promotions tab

Before we dive right into deleting your promotional emails, you should first know how to add and remove the promotions tab altogether. Here's how you can do both actions from the web browser and Gmail app.

Using the web browser

Whether your go-to web browser is Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or something else, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Log into your Gmail account.
  3. Go to the cog icon on the top-right corner of your screen to open the Gmail settings.
  4. Choose Default as your Inbox Type.
  5. View your Categories just below, and uncheck or check the box next to Promotions (depending on whether you want to add or remove your Promotions tab).
  6. Scroll down and click the Save Changes button.

Now, your promotions tab will be visible or invisible, depending on what you selected — and if you change your mind in the future, it’s a 20-second trip to your settings to switch things back.

Using the Gmail app

No access to a laptop or personal computer? No problem! You can add and remove the Promotions tab in Gmail right from your smartphone. Here's how:

  1. Open the Gmail application on your phone.
  2. Go to the main menu by clicking on the icon at the top-left corner of the screen (it takes the shape of three stripes in most smartphones).
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Tap on Inbox Customizations.
  5. Go to Inbox Categories.
  6. Turn the toggle next to Promotions off.

How to move emails from the primary to the promotions tab

Even if you remove the Gmail promotions tab, some unnecessary promotional emails might still make their way to your primary tab, and you'll want to clear them out. There's a low-hassle way to do this. Here's how:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Log into your Gmail account.
  3. Select all of the promotional emails you want to move from your primary tab.
  4. Right-click on your mouse.
  5. Choose Move from the pop-up menu.
  6. Choose the destination folder where you want to send the emails (spam folder, trash can, etc.).
  7. Wait for Gmail to finish moving them.

How to delete all promotional emails in Gmail inbox

What if you're completely fed up with how promotional emails are eating their way through your Google Drive storage space? In that case, you'll want to empty your entire promotions folder using the steps below.

But please note: These methods will permanently delete your emails, so make sure that's what you want.

Using the web browser

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Log into your Gmail account.
  3. Go to the Categories tab in the drop-down menu at the left of the screen.
  4. Click on Promotions.
  5. Tap on the checkbox at the left of the screen, right above the first promotion email.
  6. Click on Select All Conversations in Promotions right above the selected emails.
  7. Click on the delete icon (shaped like a trash can) below the search bar.
  8. Wait for Gmail to mass delete your emails and send them to the trash folder.

Using the Gmail app

As always, there's an alternative way available for smartphones. However, you should know that Gmail apps don't have a Select All option, so you'll have to select each email individually. As you can imagine, a mass deletion of email is much easier on a desktop, but if you have no choice but to use a smartphone, here’s what you can do:

  1. Open the Gmail mobile app.
  2. Open the main menu from the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Choose Promotions from the menu to go to the Promotions folder.
  4. Click on the profile picture of the sender of the email to select it.
  5. Select multiple emails if you need to.
  6. Go to the garbage can icon at the top-right corner of the screen.
  7. Wait for Gmail to delete promotions.

How to prevent more promotions from landing in your inbox

Deleting promotional emails from your inbox is only a temporary solution to your problem. If you want these pesky emails gone from your inbox for good, you’ll need to take further measures, like blocking senders, unsubscribing from mailing lists, or filtering your emails. Here are your options.

1. Block the senders of promotional emails

If you keep seeing the same sender name next to the promotional emails in your inbox, you could consider blocking them altogether. That's a permanent solution to your problem, as opposed to other temporary options on our list. Here's how to do this:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Log into your Gmail account.
  3. Go to any email from the sender you want to block.
  4. Open the three-dot menu from the top-right corner of your screen.
  5. Choose Block from the menu.

2. Divert promotional emails to spam

If some Gmail promotional emails feel more like spam to you, follow the next steps to divert any incoming mail from that sender to your Spam folder. After that, Gmail will automatically flag similar domains and emails as spam. Here's how to do this:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Log into your Gmail account.
  3. Go to the Promotions tab.
  4. Click on the checkbox next to the email you want to move to spam.
  5. Click on the spam icon above the selected emails. (Note: This looks like an exclamation mark on most browsers.)
  6. Click on the Report Spam or Report Spam & Unsubscribe button.

Once you finish doing this, you won't find promotional emails from those senders again in your inbox.

3. Filter and auto-delete promotional emails

Gmail has email filters and rules to make our lives easier, and you can use them to auto-delete your promotional emails. Here's how to do this:

  1. Log into your Gmail account and go to the Promotions category.
  2. Click on the checkboxes next to the emails you want to auto-delete.
  3. Tap on the three dots on the bar right above the selected emails.
  4. Select Filter Messages Like These from the menu that pops up.
  5. Click Create Filter.
  6. Select all emails after applying the filter.
  7. Delete the emails.

4. Unsubscribe from promotional emails

Finally, do you want to know the easiest way to prevent promotional emails from sneaking inside your inbox? Unsubscribe from them! By doing this, you stop emails from reaching you altogether instead of having to delete them after they arrive or sort them with rules. Here’s how to do this:

  1. Log into your Gmail account.
  2. Choose an email from the list you want to unsubscribe from.
  3. Hover on the email from the outside till the Unsubscribe button appears on the right.
  4. Click on Unsubscribe.
  5. Confirm your choice from the confirmation menu that pops up.

And that's it! You won't receive emails from the same brand or company again unless you re-subscribe to their mailing lists.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover my deleted promotional emails on Gmail?

After you send your promotional emails to the trash can, you have 30 days to recover them. Any longer than that, and your emails will be permanently deleted.

How do I manage my promotional emails across multiple devices?

Gmail's settings are synchronized across all devices, so whether you're using a phone, tablet, or laptop, any change you make to your inbox on one device will be reflected across them all. These include email filters, deletions, unsubscriptions, and more.

Can I temporarily hide my promotions without deleting them?

Yes, you can. Gmail lets you archive emails, which makes them feel deleted, but you can actually access them later if you want to by finding them via search. To try this, select all the emails you want to hide from your inbox, and click on the Archive icon above the selected emails.

Is there a way to delete promotions automatically?

Sadly, Gmail doesn't come with a feature that deletes email automatically. The best you can do is create filters for promotions to make deleting them easier. Some third-party applications provide this feature if you’re interested in this kind of solution.

Can I create custom labels for organizing promotions in Gmail?

Yes, Gmail lets you create custom labels to organize your emails, including those in the Promotions tab. For example, you can create labels like "Promotions - Clothing," "Promotions - Electronics," and so on. They'll help you categorize your emails and locate the most relevant ones easily. To create these labels, go to the Labels section on the left side of your screen, and choose Create Label.
